KOTOR
Kotor is a city located in the southwest of Montenegro, famous for its historical and natural beauties. Kotor, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, in the inner part of the Bay of Kotor. Kotor, the name of the bay in this region, also gave its name to this city. Kotor, Dobrata and Perast are the settlements in this bay. All of them are called Kotor Administrative Region. The karst mountains rising behind the city and the sea stretching out in front of it make Kotor an ideal destination for history lovers and nature lovers alike. While wandering through the narrow streets of Kotor, it is possible to come across a piece of history in every corner, and this historical atmosphere fascinates everyone who visits the city.
After spending our first day in Budva, we settled into the house we rented in Dobrata for the evening and spent the second day exploring Kotor. Kotor Old Town; In our opinion, it is the most beautiful and most popular destination of all the cities in Montenegro. You will feel like you are in the TV series "The Witcher" while wandering around its streets. The city was surrounded by walls to protect it from wars in the Middle Ages. There are 3 main gates to enter Kotor old city; North Gate, South Gate and Main Gate. The northern gate is connected to the city by a bridge. At the main gate entrance on the beach, there is Tito's famous quote:
''DON'T WANT WHAT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU, AND DON'T GIVE UP WHAT BELONGS TO YOU''
The most popular places in the country; San Giovanni Castle, St. Tryphon Cathedral and Maritime Museum Ordu Square, Clock Tower, St. There are many important tourist attractions, such as Nicholas Church. Kotor has an incredible cuisine due to centuries of influence from the Greeks, Ottomans, Austro-Hungarian empire and many other empires. But the Venetians who managed to stay here for 400 years (1420 - 1797) were the ones who left the most mark on the city. The architecture of the city is also inherited from them.

Kotor Old Town (Stari Grad)
Kotor Old Town tells a story from the Middle Ages with its charming atmosphere. After entering the city from the main gate, you can discover all the places to see by walking through its narrow streets. While wandering around these streets in an unplanned way, you will see many places to see; Ordu Square (Piazza of the Arms), built in 1166, St. Tryphon Cathedral, Maritime Museum, 1350-step San Giovanni Castle, St. Paul's Church, which was used as both a Catholic and Orthodox church. Luke's Church, the largest Orthodox church in Kotor. Nicholas Church, Karampana Fountain. You will see the Clock Tower (Torre Dell'orologio) and the Column of Shame in front of it. This triangular shaped stone; It was the square where those who committed crimes were brought here and shamed in front of the public.
By climbing the Kotor Walls, you can watch the magnificent views of the Bay of Kotor.

Kotor Castle (San Giovanni Castle)
Kotor was an important trading port on the Adriatic Sea and therefore became a target of various maritime powers. The castle was built to protect the city against attacks from sea and land. It is also known as the Castle of San Giovanni and was first built in the 9th century. However, the castle was expanded and strengthened in various periods. The most extensive construction work took place during the rule of the Republic of Venice, especially between the 15th and 17th centuries. The Venetians strengthened the castle and walls in order to protect Kotor from the attacks of the Ottoman Empire and other enemies.
Kotor Castle is located on a steep slope that can be climbed by approximately 1,350 steps. The walls of the castle consist of solid stone walls that surround the city and extend to the sea. The castle is equipped with various gates, bastions and watchtowers. Breathtaking views of the Bay of Kotor and its surroundings can be enjoyed from San Giovanni Castle, the highest point of the castle.
By climbing the castle, you can learn about history and enjoy impressive views. This climb to the castle can be a bit physically challenging,
Now, there is a lot of information about this castle. First of all, it is recommended that you go there early in the morning. There are no guards at these gates, not because you can enter and exit free of charge. In fact, it is better to go there in the cool of the morning because it will be very difficult to climb these steps in the heat of the noon. As for the fee, normally there is a fee of 5 euros per person to pass on the way out. Of course, since there is no guard on duty before 8 o'clock, you can pass without paying a fee, but there is a serious penalty for this and no one talks about it. If you read the warnings on the sides of the entrance doors, you will see that if you are caught, you may have to pay a fine of up to 1000 euros. You decide if it's worth it.
I have a suggestion for those who do not want to climb these steps and get tired. You can go up to the Serpentine Hill by car. You can see the magnificent views from here. You need to drive carefully because the road is a bit narrow and mountainous.

Saint Thyrphon Cathedral
Saint Tryphon Cathedral was built in 1166 and reflects the Romanesque and Gothic architectural style. The influence of Byzantine and Romanesque styles is seen in the interior.
